The Zappos Story
The year was 1999, and Nick Swinmurn (the founder) was walking through a
shopping mall in San Francisco trying to find a pair of shoes.
Some stores had the
right style, but not the right color. Another store had the right color,
but not the correct size. He spent the next few hours in the mall, going
store to store, until he finally went home empty-handed.
When he got home, he
tried looking for his shoes online, and still was unsuccessful. Even
though there were a lot of "mom and pop" stores selling shoes online,
what caught his attention was that there was no major online retailers
selling shoes.
Nick decided to quit
his regular day job and start an online shoe store... and Zappos.com was
launched!
Originally his idea
was to create a web site that offered the best selection in shoes as far
as brands, styles, colors, sizes, and widths.
For the past 7 years,
the Zappos brand name and their aspirations have evolved, and in
addition to offering the best selections, they're also the company that
provides the absolute best service online.
At Zappos.com, they
believe that the speed at which a customer receives an online purchase
plays a very important role in how that customer thinks about shopping
online again in the future, so at Zappos, they focus on making sure your
shoes get delivered as quickly as possible. To do that, they warehouse
everything that they sell, and unlike most other online shoe retailers,
they don't make an item available for sale unless it is physically
present in their warehouse.
The online shoe market
It's a $40 billion
market in the US, and way back in 1999, $2 billion of that was sold by
mail order catalogs. Only 1 out of 3 customers had purchased shoes by
mail order before, suggesting that the e-commerce market would be much
bigger than $2 billion.
In brick and mortar
stores, almost 1 in 3 sales are lost because the customer's size is not
in stock. These stores are limited in how much inventory they can carry,
and hence they are limited in the number of brands,styles per brand, and
number of sizes and widths they can stock.
At Zappos, they carry
over 700 name brands, over 90,000 styles, and over 2 million pairs of
shoes in stock and ready for immediate shipment. They offer the best
selection of shoes available anywhere, but more importantly they have
the best service.
